New Flyer receives order from New York City Transit to build 74 Orion CNG buses
Daimler Buses North America, Inc. (DBNA) has assigned to Canadian-based New Flyer its contract with New York City Transit Authority (NYCT) and the MTA Bus Company to manufacture the heavy-duty buses. The assignment is a result of DBNA’s decision to exit production of transit buses for the North American market.
The US Federal Transit Administration funded contract includes an additional 30 option buses that will not be ordered at this time and further extends the long standing partnership between New Flyer and NYCT.
“Delivering to NYCT requirements was our top priority and we are pleased that we could react so quickly due to DBNA’s transition plan with a solution that met NYCT needs by continuing the build of our current bus production run,” said Paul Soubry, New Flyer’s President and CEO.
Production of the 74 natural gas Orion buses will commence in August 2012, while the delivery to NYCT is expected by the end of the year. Final assembly of these vehicles will take place in New Flyer’s Crookston, Minnesota facility.
